A series of rejected posters for the Golden Road brewery in L.A.. The concept was based on their latest premium brew called ‘Wolf Among Weeds’. The 18X24 posters were to be screen printed, single color on various color paper stock.
Happy New Year! Attached is a card I sent out to all my acquaintances, friends, clients and others who I thought deserved a little love.
The idea started with breaking up the numerals and stacking them like Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture. The challenge was to make the L and V a 2 and 1, respectively. The O is obviously shared with zero and the E is sort of like a backwards 3. It started off that way until I noticed it’s much more interesting have a capital E within the negative space of the 3. Everything came together at that point and I began to treat each quadrant separately .
As I was writing out the signature, I noticed that the message of LOVE 2013 has a playful duality if it says LOVE IN 2013. The idea, of course, being that the word LOVE is actually IN 2013. An idea that seemed to work nicely with the graphics.
There are 2 different formats because one is formatted like a poster and the other is for twitter.
I finally got around to making something for my own muse! This is a collage of screen grabs and vector graphics superimposed on top of each other and outputted onto a sheet of metal.
The piece was inspired by an obscure film from the 60′s called Funeral Parade of Roses by Toshio Matsumoto, a japanese director and video artist. The film supposedly inspired Kubrick’s classic, A Clockwork Orange.
FILM IS ART!

Here is a collection of slides from the Tokyo Olympics. I believe they were souvenirs that were sold at the games.
With photography becoming so disposable with digital photos, it’s nice to hold and flip through a set of photos and spend time with each one. The design and packaging, like everything from the 1960′s, is timeless and has a nice sense of permanence. I wasn’t around in the 60′s but there’s a familiarity that resonates with me.
Here is a beautiful package from Japan for sweet red bean cakes called “Yokan”. Part of the beauty is its simplicity and elegance that evokes a feeling of tranquility. There is a nice diversity of materials (linen paper, bamboo leaves, rice paper) that works seamlessly with the design, construction and the printing (screen printing, letterpress, spot colors, offset). This package can easily be the end product in itself and makes the experience of opening the package sweeter than its contents.
The package measures 7 1/8 X 8 X 1 13/16 inches and fits comfortably in your hands.
